For years, Las Vegas strippers have protested the working conditions at Las Vegas strip clubs. Because they are self-employed and independent contractors, they do not have rights such as minimum wage, workers’ compensation, or health insurance. However, the Nevada Supreme Court ruled in 2014 that these clubs are not exempt from the federal Fair Labor Standards Act. This ruling came after dancers from the Sapphire Las Vegas Gentleman’s Club sued the casino. While the ruling is a victory for the strippers, little has changed in the indpersustry since then.
A five-year undercover investigation has revealed that many strippers are not who they claim to be. The investigation was coordinated by the vice section of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. The vice section’s work involves preventing and investigating vice-related crimes, including prostitution, drug-related “trick rolls,” and sexually-oriented criminal enterprises.
